Marcos Ruben Gonzales Torres

Marcos turned to Ashtanga Yoga in 2014 when faced with a deep personal crisis while in his last years of law school.  Marcos found great relief in the practice as he developed physical strength and mental clarity.  He practiced constantly inspired to move more deeply into the sadhana, and in 2018 Marcos completed a 600-hour Hatha Yoga Instructor Training at the Yuukti Yoga School in Santiago, Chile, which had become his spiritual home since he began his practice.   Marcos enjoyed delving into the history and philosophy of Yoga, subtle anatomy, and pranayama bolstering a practical approach based on anatomy, nutrition, and pedagogical techniques.  Practicing Hatha Yoga gave Marcos a larger perspective about the human being’s potential, and through training with the Ashtanga Series with emphasis on alignment in the postures, Marcos’ focus shifted to body-awareness and a therapeutic approach in practice and teaching.

During Instructor training, Marcos studied with Lygia Lima exploring Vinyasa and the flow of energy, and participated in  Flexion - Extension seminars with Claudia diaz Boitano, an Iyengar Method teacher, and Leticia Catalan.  In assisting Polly Scheinwald in instructor training courses, Marcos learned to offer proper adjustments.  In 2019 the Yuukti Yoga School awarded Marcos a scholarship to participate in John Scott’s workshop, which instilled in Marcos a therapeutic vision of Ashtanga.  Marcos is grateful to all the teachers who have guided him with love and understanding, especially to Francisca Holuigue, principal of Yuukti Yoga School.

Marcos considers Yoga a life pillar in spiritual healing.  For Marcos Yoga provides a means to revolutionize the internal system, to live in awareness with our surroundings, respecting and recognizing that our existence from conception is part of something greater in unity with what surrounds us and our being.

Ashtanga with Marcos

Ashtanga

Sri K. Pattabhi Jois created the Ashtanga Yoga method to guide practitioners through a specific sequence of postures, applying Bhanda (energy locks), Dristhi (focused gaze), and Ujjayi Pranayama (“victorious breath” or “oceanic breath”) to generate flexibility and strength, heal the body, and develop focused concentration and awareness.  Practitioners respect a precise number of Vinyasa between each asana (posture), focusing on the traditional Sanskrit count to integrate each asana with the breath. Learning how to coordinate properly each inhalation and exhalation with every aspect of the sequence--entering, staying, and leaving each posture--comprises an integral element of the practice.  Rooted in ahimsa (nonviolence), Marcos takes a therapeutic approach in leading Ashtanga classes, respecting practitioners’ limits and emphasizing the practice’s healing benefits and transformational alchemy.

Restorative Yoga with Marcos

Restorative yoga

Inspired by the teachings of BKS Iyengar, Restorative Yoga explores the therapeutic aspect of asanas, using props to assist and support us to relax deeply into the postures with an emphasis on alignment.  Without exerting ourselves or engaging in physical efforts, we receive the benefits of passive stretching in a nourishing restful state. These gentle, slow-moving classes help stress to melt away, encourage deep rest and healing, and provide a beautiful compliment to more athletic activities.

Hatha

Hatha Yoga classes incorporate asana (postures), meditation, and pranayama (breathing) to balance the Solar and Lunar energies that inhabit our being.  The practice of asanas regulates and unifies our natural polarities, builds strength in the body, and helps to remove blocks to find greater flexibility.  Meditation calms the mind, quieting excess mental chatter, to focus mental energy with clear intention.  Pranayama directs our vital energy to restore balanced flows and harmonize with our highest sense of health and wellbeing.
