The Graffiti Jam was a great success. Be sure to check out the new murals and graffiti at the Pelicans beach entrance, Cabinas Chale, Hotel Torro Blanco, Super New China, and between San Carlos Hardware and MegaSuper. There are some wonderful works, and my favorite is this piece by Sebastian Ayala that highlights nature in bold colors and resonates the reminder ‘Be Here Now’.

Kech created this mural to bring color and interest to a central point in Playa Hermosa, where the main road and second beach entrance meet. Enthusiastic to explore a new technique, he found inspiration in the local community and the mosaic work that has been iconic to this town–find mosaics installed on beach tables, trash receptacles, signs, gate-houses, and in the homes and restaurants. A tribute to the artists, local initiatives, and community, this mural celebrates Costa Rica’s vibrant natural beauty and encourages us to continue to care for the land and sea.

The Garden Party Benefit this Sunday June 7th is a great opportunity to connect with the cause and support Playa Hermosa’s environmental initiatives. Join the fun at La Gaviota Tropical Jardines 4:00 -7:00 PM with live music, artists booths, silent auction, and raffle.

And the following weekend June 11th-14th you have a unique opportunity to witness murals in the making as forty artists transform Playas del Coco public spaces at the Summer Camp Graffiti Jam. Connect with Kech and the other artists Thursday evening at The Palms, watch them paint Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and the weekend will close with a celebration Sunday night at Zi’s. This art festival aims to transform public spaces with colorful and uplifting murals, showcase national talent, and integrate culture, youth, and environmental awareness in an inspiring experience of creative expression. The event kicks off Thursday evening with an artist meet-and-greet at The Palms Hotel. We are expecting more than forty artists, around 3/4 local to Costa Rica, and 1/4 coming from abroad. They will be painting Friday - Sunday at eight different walls within the Coco community: off Coco's main street by Ferretería San Carlos; on the road to Ocotal by Super New China, Los Cartagos, and Taco Rosado; and off of carretera la Chorrera the Pelícanos beach entrance, Cabinas Chale, and Hotel Puerta del Sol. The closing party will be at Zi Lounge Sunday evening with live DJs, MCs, and break-dancers. All activities are open to the public free of charge, but if you’d like to make a contribution to support this initiative and help it become a regular event in Coco, you may do so via Sinpe or Paypal, or at the opening and closing events. This festival is made possible with the sponsorship of Loop Colors and Artopia, and the generous support from local businesses and organizations receiving the artists including Anika Boutique Suites, Toro Blanco Hotel, The Palms Hotel, Hotel M&M Beach House, Hotel Colono Beach, Hotel La Puerta del Sol, Villa del Sol Boutique Hotel, Island Golf Cart Rentals, Ferretería San Carlos, ADICOCO, la Municipalidad de Carrillo, and La Asociación de Cultura.

Watching an artist work in aerosol can be captivating, seeing how shapes and layers come together, and how quickly we can witness an image transform. It draws our interest and attention, a unique look into an artist’s process and view. This large-scale work of vibrant color and sea life was painted live at a community event in the park. It's been inspiring to see that the Playas del Coco "Cultural Encounter" has focused on racism, discrimination, and rights, in offering several workshops and presentations to educate around these themes, identify how they affect our daily lives, and inspire action for change. Thursday and Friday's events have included a puppet presentation for kids: 'Amo Mi Melanina' (I Love My Melanin), youth workshops on racism, oppression, and discrimination, and a workshop for community leaders to evaluate how we experience racism in the community.

Kech Artes exhibits street art technique to inspire kids to value their artistic talents and art's power to uplift community

Kech and I are honored to be invited back to participate in Saturday's event 'Ensenamos a los Ninos a Sonar' (Let's Teach the Children to Dream), which will take place in Coco's beachfront park Amor de Temporada 9 - 3pm. This is a free event with tons of activities designed for children 3 - 10 years old. Kech will be bringing out a giant canvas and beautiful palette of spray paint to showcase large-scale street art technique, inspiring kids to pursue their artistic talents and value how public art can uplift community.

I will provide the hoard of hula hoops to offer an opportunity for free play and exploration, creative movement, innovative game-making, and joyful challenges to learn and master new skills and build self-confidence. Hula Hooping is fun way to build strength, develop body-awareness and body-control, and promote mobility in a safe and gentle aerobic activity for all ages.

We loved being a part of this event in December 2019, and we're so happy to see the event grow this year; we hope it will continue to be a Coco tradition. Many thanks to Ophir Cultura for organizing this event, to the University of Costa Rica's Social Action projects, and support from ADICOCO, Cine Hermosa, and many other local organizations and businesses that make this event a success.
