Vanessa will guide a 90-minute asana sequence focused on poses to open the hips and shoulders.  In yoga we recognize that addressing the body at the physical level can impact our emotional and mental states and wellbeing.  Conscious practice to release the hips helps us to surrender, accept the cycles of life, and flow with our emotions in any context or situation.  Targeting tension in the shoulders and inviting it to soften supports heart-healing through empathy, self-love, and compassion.  The practice will be suitable for students with all levels of experience; Vanessa affirms that, “Yoga belongs to all of us. Yoga is the path of reminding us who we really are and why we are here."  We will take about a 20-minute break before reconvening to explore traditional Yoga philosophy around the concepts of Karma and Dharma.  These are themes that we can consider and apply in our lives, having to do with the energy we put into the world and what we receive, and understanding our inner being and sacred mission or purpose.  If you’re curious about Yoga and wellbeing, don’t miss the opportunity to connect with yourself and awaken the beautiful energy that vibrates inside you.  Please dress to move, and bring water, a Yoga mat, towel, pen, notebook, and a snack for the break.

Designed to quiet the mind, soften the body, and reconnect with the breath, this slow flow practice is suitable for all levels and provides a calm and steady reset.  We will begin by taking a few moments to journal, releasing any persistent thoughts or worries, and letting go of the mental clutter we might be carrying.  This will not be a lengthy time to reflect, just a focused pause to acknowledge what’s been occupying our mental space and let it leave through pen to page.  Setting our journals aside, we will center ourselves on the mat and begin with gentle seated postures to warm and ready the body for mindful movement.  Flowing though simple sequences, finding ease in our effort, we will make our way to standing postures to summon our stability, grounding ourselves with presence. Gradually we will wind down to a restful savasana; in stillness our awareness will reside with the breath.  To conclude we will take a brief opportunity to share reflections or questions, making space for support, connection, and community. Please bring yoga mat, water, journal, and pen.

These sessions offer an hour of dynamic Vinyasa Yoga, this month focused on the core and activating the Uddiyana Bandha (Upward Abdominal Lock).  These are active sequences applying effort to overcome any inertia, and move our bodies in new ways to regenerate our inner momentum. This class is intended for participants of all levels, and to ensure that all students may practice as appropriate for their particular capacities and limits, Gaëlle will explain variations and offer personalized guidance.  While Gaëlle does incorporate hands-on adjustments, know that these are optional and communicate if you’d prefer not to receive them.  After our time building up our energies and synching our movements with the breath, we will find rest in an extended half-hour savasana.  As we settle into stillness, Gaëlle will play singing bowls, bells, rattles, and other instruments, creating a coherent soundscape to organize our energy field and support the subtle shifts ignited in our practice.  Please bring a yoga mat, water, a towel, and anything additional to feel comfortable in our extended savasana sound healing experience.

Satsang refers to a gathering of like-minded seekers engaging in discourse to deepen spiritual understanding and awaken to our true being.  We will sit in a circle so that we may see each other, and everyone will be encouraged to participate.  Vanessa will open introducing the theme and speaking to how the concepts are described and approached in yogic philosophy, then she will guide the discussion, at times posing questions to the group, and also responding to the thoughts and uncertainties that arise, from her perspective rooted in the wisdom of Ashtanga Yoga.  For those unfamiliar with yoga, these themes are universal spiritual teachings and can be applied with any faith or non-secular life.  In the Yoga Sutras written in the third century BC, Patanjali explains the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga—in Sanskrit ‘astan’ (eight) and ‘anga’ (limb)—as a practical and holistic guide to spiritual growth.  The eight limbs are: Yama (ethics), Niyama (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (bliss/union).  Our satsang will convene each month to explore new topics, this year dedicated to considering the Yamas and Niyamas, and how these principles guide our everyday life in a broad and comprehensive way such that our practice is present in every experience.  In Satsang we aim to clarify our own comprehension, and also to create a field of awareness in our group, which will ripple out into the community generating waves of rising vibration.

WITH VANESSA DA SILVA
& OSCAR CORDERO

SATURDAY MARCH 7TH
5:00 - 7:00 PM

In restorative yoga we practice conscious relaxation, allowing the body to heal and release stress and tension.  Vanessa will guide us through a one-hour series of poses, moving slowly with extended time in each posture, and allowing us to let go of what no longer serves, and experience more ease and bliss.  Oscar will accompany our practice with live handpan music, the melodic percussion and rich, enveloping tones supporting our meditative state and feeling of upliftment.  As our yoga practice comes to a close and we rest in savasana, Oscar will continue to play for another hour so that we may immerse in a sound journey supporting the nervous system and guiding the brain toward states of clarity, calm, focus, and stillness.  The combination of restorative yoga with the therapeutic sounds of handepan promotes balance and rejuvenation, recharging us to fulfill our personal mission with the guidance of the Fire Horse at the start of this Chinese New Year.

TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS
9:00 - 10:00 AM

FEBRUARY 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26
Slow Flow should feel like an extended morning stretch, opening up the body in a gentle way, an intuitive realignment and reset to begin the day. The class includes light Vinyasa, flowing through postures with care; breathing exercise to rebalance the nervous system; and restorative poses for deep relaxation and release, soothing away stress and enhancing mood and vigor.  Slow Flow aims to nurture the mind and body, to move in ways that feel good as we practice, and support us in feeling better beyond the mat.  This is an accessible class for all students.    Gaëlle will offer adjustments and honor participants' choice whether to receive them; please communicate clearly your preferences.  Bring a mat, towel, and water.

February Yoga Class Schedule Playas del Coco Costa Rica
February Wellness Events and Community Activities Schedule Playas del Coco Costa Rica
We’ve got two new classes lined up for Tuesdays and Thursdays in February.  Gaëlle is teaching a morning Slow Flow to awaken the body and center the mind to start the day with renewed energy, and Adriana is leading Barre Fitness in the evenings for a low-impact full workout to end the day in a powerful way and rest well at night.  Our other yoga classes continue–Monday and Wednesday evenings Vinyasa Yoga and Sound Healing with Gaëlle, Wednesday mornings Yoga for Clarity and Calm with Sarah, and Friday mornings Vinyasa Flow with Taylor.  Taylor’s visit to Coco will come to an end this month, so get into class with her while you can.  It’s been great having her back, and we’re glad she’ll be teaching a few more classes yet.  We’ll miss her uplifting energy when it’s time to go, but we’re grateful to keep the Vinyasa group going with Sarah stepping in to lead starting February 27th.

We hope you’ll join the wonderful upcoming events in February.  The Full Moon Circles with Raquel and Diego have been beautiful experiences with ceremony and sound, and marking each month with these inspiring rituals in community is a joy.  We’ll have our second Spiritual Satsang with Vanessa diving deeper into yoga philosophy. The conversation flowed in our first circle creating a real sense of sharing and connection, and we're looking forward to this communal aspect of yoga continuing to grow, feeling the support of the sangha in our practice.  There was a great group for the first Journal Circle with Sarah, and they’ll be getting together again this month to explore shadow work, bringing to light what might be buried or obscured within.  Oscar is leading another Handpan Immersion Workshop; it sold out last month and everyone enjoyed the experience immensely, so we’re lucky he’s continuing to teach and make this instrument accessible.  And finally, to close out the month, we have a special opportunity to learn African Dance, moving the full body with energy and expression.  Please see the dedicated posts for each offering for more details, and contact the event organizers with any questions and to join the group.

Spiritual Satsang With Vanessa da Silva

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 6TH
4:30 - 6:30 PM
CONVENES MONTHLY

Satsang refers to a gathering of like-minded seekers engaging in discourse to deepen spiritual understanding and awaken to our true being.  We will sit in a circle so that we may see everyone, and everyone will be encouraged to participate. For February we will discuss Satya (truthfulness), another Yama, related to the idea of following your heart.  In Satsang we aim to clarify our own comprehension, and also to create a field of awareness in our group, which will ripple out into the community generating waves of rising vibration.

Remember to bring flowers and/or a small personal item for the altar, as well as water and a pen and journal if you like.

FRIDAY JANUARY 16TH
4:30 - 6:30 PM
CONVENES MONTHLY

‘Satsang’, derived from Sanskrit ‘sat’ (truth, reality) and ‘sangha’ (assembly, company, community), refers to a gathering of like-minded seekers engaging in discourse to deepen spiritual understanding and awaken to our true being.  We will sit in a circle, and everyone will be encouraged to participate and speak to the themes and questions we explore.  As we form our circle each person may place an item on a center altar to imbue the space with our intentions and energies, and also so that the item may be charged with the field of consciousness we create as a group.  Vanessa will open introducing the theme and speaking to how the concepts are described and approached in yogic philosophy.  For those unfamiliar with yoga, these themes are universal spiritual teachings and can be applied with any faith or non-secular life.  Then Vanessa will guide the discussion, at times posing questions to the group, and also responding to the thoughts and uncertainties that arise, from her perspective rooted in the wisdom of Ashtanga Yoga.  In the Yoga Sutras written in the third century BC, Patanjali explains the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga—in Sanskrit ‘astan’  (eight) and ‘anga’ (limb)—as a practical and holistic guide to spiritual growth.  The eight limbs are: Yama (ethics), Niyama (observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (bliss or union).  Our first satsang will explore the idea, “Love is the most powerful force in the Universe,“ and will examine how this relates to Ahimsa, one of the five Yamas.  Each month we will consider another Yama or Niyama, how these principles guide our everyday life in a broad and comprehensive way such that our practice is present in every experience.  In satsang we aim to clarify our own comprehension, and also to create a field of awareness in our group, which will ripple out into the community generating waves of rising vibration.
