Write From Within Journal Circle

Writing is healing. Writing brings our feelings and ideas to the forefront of our awareness, and writing unpacks or unravels whatever we’ve been holding inside. Our journal circle will begin with time to settle into our space, then Sarah will facilitate a guided meditation or mindfulness exercise to tap into the writer within. She will offer guidance and provide prompts for us to put pen to paper, but we are free to follow our own thoughts without any particular aim. Often we may be surprised with where our writing leads us.

Writing fosters connection. We will end each journal circle with time to share. While there is no pressure to share, our intention is to create a safe container for us to write and share in community, to support and hold each other through whatever comes up in our journaling. This circle is open to anyone seeking connection, reflection, and clarity. We hope to bring a group together on a monthly basis, each month centered around a different theme or topic. Our first circle will focus on intentions for the new year. If you've set a new year's intention to begin, or return to, a journaling practice, then keep yourself inspired and consistent with like-minded company in our circle.

Handpan Immersion Workshop

The Handpan, or Hang Drum, a modern, melodic percussion instrument, is played with light touch of the hands and fingers. Known for its resonant, harmonic, and relaxing sound, its note fields are tuned precisely to a specific musical scale. This immersive workshop designed for beginners presents a portal to a unique musical journey. We will dedicate time to technique for precise touch to achieve clean, resonant tones. We will practice essential rhythms with simple fundamental patterns to create hypnotic pulsations. Then we will find our first melody, integrating scale and rhythm to play with confidence a short, graceful song. Many people consider playing and listening to the Handpan a therapeutic experience. The way multiple tones sound simultaneously creates a rich, enveloping sonic texture, both pleasing and complex, which captivates our attention promoting meditative relaxation. Playing the Handpan is an intuitive expression, which allows musicians of all levels to enter easily into states of flow.

Red-Eye Tree Frog by Kendall "Kech" Valverde
Found in Costa Rica’s tropical forests, the red-eye tree frog displays an interesting color dichotomy. While at rest with eyes closed and limbs tucked in close, only its bright green body can be seen, allowing it to camouflage among the foliage. When threatened however, the frog startles predators, flashing its striking red eyes, orange feet, and blue and yellow striped sides, giving it a moment to escape. These frogs for the most part are active at night and live near water sources high in trees, using their sticky toes to grip leaves and branches. This painting measures 184 x 136 cm, spray paint on canvas.

Bring your drums, winds, strings, or shakers to jam and dance around the bonfire. This is a free community gathering organized by Raquel Solís to activate our energies as a group through music and movement, with the natural elements of fire and sea under the power of the full moon. Meet on the beach near Café de Playa; all are welcome.

For those who are interested, following the Bonfire Jam Raquel will be facilitating an energetic harmonization ceremony at the shala. Contact Raquel for more details; space is limited.

The striking appearance of the Emperor Angelfish makes a drastic transformation over twenty-four to thirty months as the fish matures to the adult phase. While the juveniles exhibit a dark blue body with white and electric blue concentric rings becoming vertical lines at the face, over time the coloration and pattern shift to blue and yellow horizontal stripes on the body, a yellow tail fin, and a light blue face with a dark blue mask over the eyes. This painting measures 60cm x 60cm, acrylic and airbrush on canvas.

New Moon Sound Bath

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 23

Let’s come together at the time of the new moon and align with the energies of cleansing, clarity, recalibration, and renewal. We will begin with some guided movements to stretch and settle into our bodies so that we may rest comfortably during the sound bath. We will set up a circle and connect with our intentions for what we’d like to invite in before we lie back, relax, and experience the power of sound and vibration. Jose will orchestrate the sound bath with ancestral instruments including Tibetan singing bowls, Native American flutes, didgeridoo, shakers, shamanic drums, tubular bars, and more. As the sound waves wash over us and move through us, we may look inside, release and clear old energies, and recenter ourselves in this safe and restorative environment. Please wear comfortable clothes, bring a mat or thin mattress to feel comfortable lying on the floor, something to cover your eyes, and a blanket if you wish. Enjoy this unique experience of ancestral medicine in modern times.

The Guardabarranco or Motmot birds are a beautiful sight around Playas del Coco. They are known also as the "clock bird" for their unusual tail composed of two long, bare feathers, each ending in a turquoise tuft. With the unique form of their tail, combined with the bright colors of their plumage, Guardabarranco birds draw attention, a favorite among bird-watchers. This work of spray paint on canvas measures 195 x 130 cm.

FULL MOON CACAO DANCE

Experience the magic of Ecstatic Dance, facilitated by Jose Lopez. Ecstatic Dance means creating a safe container for free-form dance where everyone may express themselves freely through movement. It’s a moving meditation allowing us to process what we hold in our bodies, to root into ourselves, and to connect with the music and with others. Creating a free and safe container for Ecstatic Dance means no choreography, no photography, no talking, no shoes, no substances, and no judgments. We focus on our body, our spirit, the energy of the group, and the rhythm of the music. This is an inclusive space open to all people and all ages, no experience necessary. We aim to build community around conscious dance and to come together every month around the time of the full moon to harness the active, celebratory energy.

We will open the space with a welcoming cacao circle co-facilitated by Diego Mejias and Jose Lopez, to set our intentions and establish a sense of trust in the group. Then after a brief movement warm-up we will immerse ourselves in Ecstatic Dance to a live DJ set by Chakaruna Project. To integrate our experience we will end our evening with a sound healing and closing circle, co-facilitated by Diego Mejias.
