Shakti is the cosmic energy that creates and changes the universe; it is the divine feminine force. This workshop is designed to activate our Shakti, to awaken our inner wisdom and tap into our latent power. We’ll explore a variety of dance styles in this mindful practice based on Yoga Asana, rooting into awareness of our bodies, minds, and emotions. Patricia will guide our movement to open the pranic currents, encouraging Shakti’s creative and intelligent flow, and balancing the chakras, and she will support us to move intuitively and find a centered state of meditation in the dance.

This workshop centers the creative process, the act of making something with our own hands, connecting with ourselves, and connecting with others as we work alongside each other. We will begin with a guided meditation to center ourselves in the space with intention, then Sarah will teach the Japanese Stab Binding method to create our own beautiful handbound journals. You do not need to bring any supplies or have any prior experience; Sarah will provide all the materials, including paper handmade locally, and she will offer pointers and assistance as needed. This is a social activity, light-hearted and fun–a great way to enjoy the morning and meet new friends. Once we’ve finished binding our journals, we'll use the remaining time to decorate and personalize the covers--perhaps cutting and gluing extra scraps of handmade paper, stamping with ink the natural textures of leaves and shells, or using other stamps or pens. You are welcome to bring a few of your own materials. Sarah will provide some journal prompts to tuck or glue inside. This workshop is open to everyone regardless of age, gender, or whether you consider yourself “creative”. Let’s get together, enjoy the process, and connect.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28
10:00 - 11:30 AM
This workshop invites us to move the body with strength and awareness, to sweat, to vibrate collectively, and to connect with the rich cultural and ancestral heritage of African dance. Mónica will teach Guinean Style, an intense, liberating, and profoundly energetic expression of West African dance. Through rhythm, movement, and combined vitality, we will explore the power of the emotive body and the joy of dancing without judgment. After warming up, we will learn the steps to the beat, practice movements through the space, and bring it together in group sequences. We’ll free our inner fire, embody our authentic being, and dance by the sea to the rhythm of the drum. All are welcome; no prior experience is needed, but spaces are limited, so please join the group soon if you feel called to move, feel, enjoy, and let your body speak. Dancing barefoot is recommended, but sneakers are fine, too.

The Handpan, or Hang Drum, a modern, melodic percussion instrument, is played with light touch of the hands and fingers. Known for its resonant, harmonic, and relaxing sound, its note fields are tuned precisely to a specific musical scale. This immersive workshop designed for beginners presents a portal to a unique musical journey. We will dedicate time to technique for precise touch to achieve clean, resonant tones. We will practice essential rhythms with simple fundamental patterns to create hypnotic pulsations. Then we will find our first melody, integrating scale and rhythm to play with confidence a short, graceful song. Many people consider playing and listening to the Handpan a therapeutic experience. The way multiple tones sound simultaneously creates a rich, enveloping sonic texture, both pleasing and complex, which captivates our attention promoting meditative relaxation. Playing the Handpan is an intuitive expression, which allows musicians of all levels to enter easily into states of flow.

It's been inspiring to see that the Playas del Coco "Cultural Encounter" has focused on racism, discrimination, and rights, in offering several workshops and presentations to educate around these themes, identify how they affect our daily lives, and inspire action for change. Thursday and Friday's events have included a puppet presentation for kids: 'Amo Mi Melanina' (I Love My Melanin), youth workshops on racism, oppression, and discrimination, and a workshop for community leaders to evaluate how we experience racism in the community.
Kech and I are honored to be invited back to participate in Saturday's event 'Ensenamos a los Ninos a Sonar' (Let's Teach the Children to Dream), which will take place in Coco's beachfront park Amor de Temporada 9 - 3pm. This is a free event with tons of activities designed for children 3 - 10 years old. Kech will be bringing out a giant canvas and beautiful palette of spray paint to showcase large-scale street art technique, inspiring kids to pursue their artistic talents and value how public art can uplift community.
I will provide the hoard of hula hoops to offer an opportunity for free play and exploration, creative movement, innovative game-making, and joyful challenges to learn and master new skills and build self-confidence. Hula Hooping is fun way to build strength, develop body-awareness and body-control, and promote mobility in a safe and gentle aerobic activity for all ages.
We loved being a part of this event in December 2019, and we're so happy to see the event grow this year; we hope it will continue to be a Coco tradition. Many thanks to Ophir Cultura for organizing this event, to the University of Costa Rica's Social Action projects, and support from ADICOCO, Cine Hermosa, and many other local organizations and businesses that make this event a success. See you in the park. ~ Teagan

Space is limited to eight people, so please register in advance if you'd like to be part of the fun. $45 covers all materials, instruction, and wine. Everyone will go home with a beautiful completed necklace.
